A SUPERB strike by the in-form striker Trenton ‘Banga’ Lashley in the 31st minute of play was enough to send his team Christianburg/Wismar Secondary (Multi) of Linden, Region 10 (Upper Demerara/Berbice) into the semifinals of this year’s Digicel Schools National football championship with a 1-0 win over Port Kaituma of Region 1. Playing on sodden conditions at the Mackenzie Sports Club ground after some rain earlier in the day, the tussle was on between two sides who displayed at times some brilliance, which was appreciated by the crowd, including a strong following for the visitors, who looked dangerous throughout the quarter-final encounter.
In the end, there had to be a winner and it was the strike by Lashley which made the difference. Lashley collected a ball going down the right flank and turned his way in before releasing a shot catching the advancing Port Kaituma goalkeeper, Handel Flores, in no man’s land, and this accounted for the lone goal of the game.
But Port Kaituma boys played excellently and in particular their inside tiny forward Cordel Mitchell who missed a handful of chances which unfortunately did not result in goals.
One such was in the second half when he motored down the right but for the quick thinking of Multi goalkeeper Yannick Simmons, coming off his line just in time, prevented an opportunity from levelling the score.
However, earlier, Multi’s big defender Travin Dryden was there to clear on the goal-line a shot by the Port Kaituma side with goalkeeper Yannick Simmons out of position for once, as he had effected a number of good saves throughout the match.
At the same time in the second half when the Christianburg/Wismar Secondary boys were charging down the flanks it took some equally crisp defending and reflexes by their goalkeeper Handel Flores to keep out their opponents.
Lashley’s lone strike puts Christianburg/Wismar in Digicel semi-finals
