$250,000 bail for break and enter, and larceny

TWENTY-SEVEN years old Carey Vanbetterberg, of 128, Tuschen Housing Scheme, West Coast Demerara, was remanded to prison yesterday by Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry, on a charge of break and enter and larceny.
Vanbetterberg pleaded not guilty to the offense and particulars stated that on July 9, at the waterfront at Port Kaituma, he broke into the business premises of Sean Higgins and stole $660,000 in cash.
Police Sergeant Lionel Harvey, prosecuting, said that on the day in question, Higgins secured his business premises and went to the waterfront.
He returned later and found that four louvers had been removed from a window. Higgins searched the premises and found that the money was missing.
The matter was reported to the police and Vanbetterberg was arrested. Bail was granted in the sum of $250,000, and the matter was transferred to another court for August 2.
