The body of a man was yesterday afternoon found on the West Demerara River bank, a short distance from the Demerara Harbour Bridge. Reports reaching this newspaper said the man was spotted around 15:30hrs, stuck in mud on the foreshore and was initially inaccessible. A few hours later, as the tide receded and the water rose, a rescue team, including the police, managed to pull him out of the water.
Well into the evening, the body, lying at the Lyken Funeral Home, had not been identified.
Meanwhile, no one in the neighbourhood could say whether the corpse found could have been that of a Herstelling fisherman, Lakeraj Mahadeo, 39, reported missing on Wednesday. The father of five left his home on Tuesday on a fishing expedition and has not been seen nor heard of since.
The police are investigating.
