NINETEEN boxes of law books, described as an outstanding source of legal materials for reference and research, were yesterday handed over to the Ministry of Legal Affairs yesterday by the Guyana Law Association based in the United Kingdom. As a way of giving back to his home country, founder member of the association, Colin Bobb-Semple, presented the volumes to Legal Affairs Minister Charles Ramson at the ministry on Carmichael Street, North Cummingsburg.
This shipment is one in a series that has contributed to the law libraries in Guyana over the years.
Minister Ramson expressed appreciation on behalf of the government and said he was proud that Bobb-Semple, a Guyanese, took the opportunity to give back to his motherland some kind of expression of gratitude.
Bobb-Semple is already on a consultancy for the ministry with respect to the improvement of the justice sector.
“His (Bobb-Semple) work has improved the process by which the various agencies in the judicial sector could find the opportunity to move forward with some degree of competence and firmness,” Ramsonsaid.
The minister acknowledged the hard work of Justice Claudette Singh, and others, and observed that his workload would have been much heavier without their assistance.
With encouragement and assistance from the Guyana High Commission, the association has sent several shipments of law books, law reports, computers and other materials to Guyana which are now in the High Court Library, Georgetown, and also at the New Amsterdam court, as well as at the University of Guyana.
The association, over the years, has received generous donations of books and computers from the Crown Prosecution Service, the Department of Trade and Industry (now BIS), the Courts Service, the Royal Courts of Justice, the Council of Legal Education – Inns of Court School of Law, the Honourable Society of Gray’s Inn, the good offices of the Law Society, the City University, John Pethick of Wildly’s and numerous other Chambers, law booksellers and individual judges and lawyers.
The association holds many fund-raising events to assist in covering the cost of the collection and shipment of the books , computers and other materials to Guyana.
The Executive Committee comprises Treasurer Brian Horne; Secretary Lal Nawbatt; Chairperson and Social Secretary Dake Simon, and Coordinator Deo Singh.
