Unidentified teenager struck down on Fort Canje Public Road

AN unidentified teenager, who was allegedly struck by a motorcar on the Fort Canje Public Road, a stone’s throw from the Canje Bridge, remained in an unconscious condition after being transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital on Monday afternoon.
The lad was cycling along the western side of the thoroughfare, going north, when the vehicle, coming from the opposite direction, collided with him and then turned turtle in a trench overgrown with weeds.
An eye-witness said she observed the teenager cycling slowly towards the direction of the Canje bridge, ‘then I see the car sliding across the road, before ending up in the trench’.

The witness, who spoke on condition of anonymity, was at the nearby New Amsterdam Technical Institute, from where she rushed to the scene, and saw the submerged vehicle.
A public-spirited citizen, she said, jumped into the trench to assist the driver out of the muddy waters.
Meanwhile, the eye-witness related that she had forgotten that she had earlier seen the cyclist; but it was when she saw the bike, she inquired from the driver whether he was in company with anyone else; and after receiving a negative response, she enquired about the biker, who she subsequently saw, in an unconscious state, with a bag, and a pair of ear phones.
He was dressed in a black pants and a green and black jersey. The injured lad was taken to the New Amsterdam Hospital, where he was treated, and transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital.
Hospital staff is pleading with the general public to assist in identifying the lad, whom they suspect to be about 17.
Even as the victim was being attended to by medical staff, the alleged driver was in process of having the car removed from the trench aided by a tractor .
The white Toyota Carina and the driver were taken to Central Police Station, where the vehicle was lodged. A test showed that the driver was high.
