LAST week, the Minister of Health congratulated some business firms on their support for the ‘HIV/AIDS fight’. This is certainly an indication that the Guyanese business community is becoming more socially conscious.
During the very serious floods in the Rupununi and south Guyana, there was much social and economic suffering and displacement. The entire relief effort was however left to government and the Red Cross, but one Guyanese company, GT&T, made a very valuable contribution. GT&T came into the rescue operation very early by suspending its normal charges and allowing calls in the affected areas to be made at only one Guyana dollar per minute.
This reduced telephone charge obtained not merely during the actual flood period but has continued to the end of this month (June) so that rehabilitation efforts would not be burdened or stymied with high telephone charges.
GT&T’s timely gift is much appreciated by the people of The Rupununi and the flooded areas and all Guyana thanks this firm for its spontaneous help, and hope it will inspire others and that GT&T will continue on this positive course of social involvement. Thank you again, GT&T.
