35 yr old man perishes on the spot

-in early morning Sheriff Street accident
THIRTY FIVE year-old Sewcharran Persaud Ugraj, a truck driver  of 162 Mon Repos  Pasture, East Coast Demerara  was killed instantly when a Toyota IST bearing  license plate number PMM 1094,  collided with him on Sheriff Street at around 04:30 hours yesterday morning.

The motor car, allegedly driven by Delano Williams, was headed north along Sheriff Street when the driver lost control and swerved into Mr. Ugraj who was standing on the opposite side of the road, near Angee’s Boutique.
According to an eyewitness, the father of two instantly succumbed to the injuries sustained, as he was hurled some four feet into the air after the impact.
When the Guyana Chronicle visited the home of the victim yesterday afternoon, his family and friends were gathered to reflect on his life and to mourn his tragic passing.
His grieving wife, Latisha Ugraj, explained that she last saw her husband on Saturday morning at 07:30 hours as he was leaving to go to his employer to uplift his pay cheque.
“His friends pick him up to go and collect his salary, he was supposed to return home at midday, but he did not,” she recalled.
According to Mrs. Ugraj, after several failed attempts to reach her husband on his cell phone  at 05:00 hrs she decided to call his friend ‘Daniel’, who was also unreachable.

It was only until 9:30 on Sunday morning that she received a call from a rank at the Kitty Police Station who informed her that her husband was involved in an accident and advised her to go to the station, Mrs. Ugraj added.
Subsequent to this, Sewcharran Ugraj’s parents Mr. Sahadeo Ugraj and his wife Ramdai, who reside in Enmore, were then informed of their son’s accident.
Mr. Ugraj said, “The police called us and asked us if we knew anyone by that name and they told us to come down to the station , we asked to speak to my son and they just keep telling us to come down, I asked how serious and they said they cannot disclose what happened.”
He noted that after being told this he suspected that his son had died.

As to what happened during his son’s last moments, he  said, “Well ,  people who saw what happened said that my son was standing in front of Angee’s on Sheriff Street by the bus stop, they see the car swerve over the road and hit my son before ending up in the trench.”
Meanwhile, the dead man’s mother Ramdai tearfully recounted the last time she saw her son alive was on Tuesday when he visited their home.
She remembered her son to be a hard working family man who never liked to party or to be away from his family for a long period.
“He would have been home if he did not have to collect his pay, he loved his children very much, and now he is gone,” his mother tearfully related.
According to a press release issued by the Guyana Police Force Public Relations Office (PRO), investigations revealed that the driver of motor car PMM 1094 was allegedly driving at a fast rate when he lost control of the vehicle and struck down the pedestrian who was pronounced DOA at the GPHC.

The driver was tested with the use of the breathalyzer and his alcohol content at the time was found to be over the legal limit.
He is in police custody assisting with the investigations, the release added.
