After bountiful harvest…

Akawini farmers want more land for pineapple production
FARMERS in the Akawini Amerindian community in lower Pomeroon River are planning to put more land under cultivation to grow pineapples on a large scale.
Towards that objective, they want the Ministry of Agriculture to help them acquire the additional acreage to push the national ‘Grow More Food’ drive.
Their quest, to open more virgin land for production, was motivated by the just reaped bountiful pineapple harvest.
Several farmers, who spoke to the media at Front View, Akawini, last Thursday, said the pineapple crop was very successful because of the fertile soil and they are aiming to become one of the country’s top producers and growers of organic pineapples, like Mainstay Village.
The Akawini harvest of quality pineapples were purchased, at $500 each, by the local community.
