THANKS to Azad De Abreu’s helmet-trick, Carib Allstars steamrolled the National Under-21 7-1 when action in the Guyana Hockey Board’s (GHB) organized John Fernandes Insurance Services Ltd (JFIS) sponsored second division hockey league continued at the Banks DIH Thirst Park ground on Saturday. De Abreu opened his team’s account with a deflection goal in just the 8th minute and scored three more before full time, but it was his spectacular diving shot to earn his third goal of the match that would be the most entertaining.
Philip Fernandes, Dexter Wyles and Colin Aaron by virtue of a penalty stroke would round out the score sheet for the Allstars while promising midfielder, Ryan Primo, scored the lone goal for the under-21.
Despite the imbalanced score line, the National Under-21 team did manage to string together several clever build-ups with Primo and Leon Bacchus displaying good skills and composure, but the Allstars defence remained sturdy as their team took over the leadership position of the tournament.
In the second match of the afternoon, Old Fort second division chalked up their first win with a 4-1 beating of the Airbenders.
While the game got off to an even start, skilful midfielder Jason De Santos would soon begin to show his quality which made the difference between the two sides, hitting a brace in the 18th and 34th minute with nippy individual runs.
The Airbenders pulled one back eight minutes into the second half, courtesy of a Chantelle Fernandes penalty stroke earned from a swift counter-attack, before De Santos struck again in the 53rd minute to help Old Fort maintain their two goal cushion.
When Kevin Melville added another seven minutes later, it was all over for the Airbenders as their opponents completed a comfortable 4-1 victory.
Meanwhile, Carib Allstars now lead the point-standing with 7 points followed by GCC on 6, Hikers on 4, Old Fort on 3, Under-21 one and the Airbenders yet to score, with each team having two more matches to play in the first round of the competition which is being played on a two rounds format.
Matches continue today with the Airbenders seeking to earn their first points against the Hikers at GCC while Old Fort tries to harness the impressive run of the Carib Allstars at DCC, with both matches commencing at 16:45hrs respectively.
