– Town Clerk
TOWN Clerk Yonnette Pluck told a press conference yesterday that she has nothing new to report on the “sore issue” of Le Repentir Cemetery in Georgetown.
She reminded that there is a broad-based Restoration Committee, on which is represented various Government ministries, the municipality and other stakeholders.
Ms. Pluck said the committee has come up with proposals to be placed before Cabinet, seeking to address infrastructure and clearing of vegetation.
Other plans for the burial ground include cleaning drains, repairing tombs, roadways and culverts and fencing.
“All of this is yet at the stage of proposals,” she remarked, adding that among the further plans are to expand the graveyard because, at the present rate of burial, there may be no more space by September.
Pluck said the committee will see to it that the municipality receives funds continuously so that the site can be maintained even after restoration.
Mayor Hamilton Green, who was also present, together with other municipal officials, said the City Council welcomes the support that Central Government has promised for the cemetery restoration.
The Le Repentir Cemetery is, currently, an eyesore, with tombs barely visible amongst towering trees and other vegetation and has become a lurking place for vagrants and robbers.
Apart from that, the stench emanating from certain parts, especially when rain falls, is unbearable. (Telesha Persaud)
