Heavy rain, strong winds disrupt GPL connections

THE Guyana Power and Light (GPL) has said that the heavy rains and strong winds on Wednesday caused severe network disruptions, forcing outages.
As a result, there were unscheduled outages along parts of East Coast and East Bank Demerara.
In response to the disruptions, GPL’s technicians were quickly able to identify most of the problems and promptly commenced repairs.

As the repairs were completed the relevant parts of the network were re-powered.
Around midday, a burnt connection at Turkeyen disrupted the electricity supply between Success and Coldingen. The exact location of the fault was not found until after 16:00 hrs on Wednesday. The connection was promptly replaced.
At the time of writing, all affected areas have been re-powered. Individual customer faults were attended to through Wednesday night.
In spite of many pleas to customers to conserve electricity, particularly during the evening peak (18:00 hrs to 22:00 hrs) demand continues to increase, GPL said in a release yesterday.

The increased demand puts tremendous pressure on both machines and network.
Continually, increasing demand in West Coast Demerara continues to pose major challenges to GPL, particularly on the network. As indicated in the daily newspapers (June 12 to June 15), GPL on Wednesday installed devices called capacitator banks along West Coast. These devices help to regularize voltage along the network. The installation necessitated a planned outage between 08:00 hrs and 17:00 hrs.
