THE Guyana National Bureau of Standards (GNBS) is advising the General Public that there is a recall of three models of the Lasko brand and one model of the Galaxy brand of box fans which were manufactured by Lasko Products Inc.
GNBS, in a statement, said these fans were recalled due to a manufacturing defect that can result in electrical failure or even fire when they are put into use.
This is according to information provided by the Belize Bureau of Standards to the GNBS which has a mandate to monitor all electrical and electronic appliances that are imported or locally manufactured under its Standards Compliance programme.
The voluntary recall of these products began in March, 2011 when the U.S Consumer Product Safety Commission working with the manufacturer, Lasko Products Inc. issued a voluntary recall due to reports of fires caused by motor failures, and electrical failure in the fan’s motor.
The recall pertains to box fans with the model numbers 3720, 3723, and 3733. It also includes Galaxy box fans with the model numbers 4733 which have the date 2002-03 or 2003-04 stamped at the bottom of the metal frame. Fans manufactured by Lasko Products Inc. can be identified by the printed words “Lasko or Galaxy” on the fan.
GNBS said it’s iInspectors have conducted countrywide visits to sale outlets to determine whether any of the defective models of fans were imported into Guyana. The visits revealed that although there are Lasko and Galaxy fans on the market, none of the defective models was identified.
However, the GNBS is urging importers and dealers of fans to ensure that they do not import or sell any of the defective fans. Concurrently, the GNBS is also urging consumers to be cognizant of the recall and be vigilant when purchasing fans by ensuring that they do not purchase any of the recalled models.
Meanwhile, the GNBS will continue to monitor the commodities falling under its purview at ports of entry, and sales outlets to ensure that they are in compliance with the respective requirements.
