NINETEEN-YEAR-OLD Anastasia Durant, of Angoy’s Avenue, New Amsterdam, Berbice, was remanded to prison yesterday on a charge of trafficking 371 grammes of cannabis (marijuana).
She appeared before Magistrate Roby Benn at New Amsterdam Court and was refused bail, until July 8, after she pleaded not guilty.
Police Corporal Orin Joseph, prosecuting, said, on June 9, at 12:40hrs, Durant, in company with two others, was walking along the roadway in Vryman’s Erven, New Amsterdam, when Police, acting on information received, stopped her and found the drug in a search of her person.
The Prosecutor said the defendant had a black leather bag in which was a plastic bag containing leaves, seeds and stems of the prohibited plant.
Joseph successfully objected to bail for Durant, on the ground that the charge was laid under Section 94 of the Criminal Law Offences Act, which stipulates that the grant must be only if special reasons are advanced.
