PRIME Minister Sam Hinds and Minister of Culture Youth and Sport Frank Anthony yesterday joined members of the Shri Mandir at Enmore to commemorate Enmore Martyrs’ Day.
Enmore Martyrs’ Day is in remembrance of the five sugar workers who were shot and killed on June 16, 1948, by colonial policemen, while they were demonstrating for more pay and better working conditions. Prime Minister Hinds, who is acting President, said Enmore Martyrs’ Day is a sad event in the history of Guyana, but it plays a significant role. He stated that these workers were killed in a struggle against a system that was unfair and unjust, a system in which they were being taken advantage of, and Guyanese should ensure that such an event does not happen again.
Minister Frank Anthony said the Enmore Martyrs gave their lives for the betterment of not only their community, but the entire country. He paid tribute to the mandir and its devotees for upholding the tradition of having a service every year, for over 60 years, to honour the Enmore Martyrs. (GINA)
