As Digicel continues to promote community spirit across Guyana, residents of Matthew’s Ridge and surrounding areas were the most recent beneficiaries of the countrywide effort. Residents were yesterday treated to a full day of exciting activities which brought out the young and old of the community.
The day began with a football coaching clinic for students of the Matthew’s Ridge Primary, and this was conducted by National Youth Football coach, Seon Erskine. Erskine went through a variety of football techniques with the youngsters. According to Erskine, the students have much potential.
“It was quite a privilege to collaborate with Digicel on this project. The children were very receptive to what I was teaching them and I saw great talent. This talent needs to be nurtured and regular activities such as this will have a great impact on sharpening their skills,” Erskine said.
Immediately after the children’s football coaching clinic, scores of children gathered at the community centre where they enjoyed several fun activities, including trampoline jumping and face painting. Their parents were very appreciative of this fun day for the children.
“It is nice to see that Digicel took the time to bring all these nice stuff all the way from Georgetown to Region One, so that the children can have some fun,” one father said.
The adults were not excluded from the excitement. Port Kaituma and Matthew’s Ridge went head to head in a volleyball and football competition. Port Kaituma walked away winners of both competitions.
According to Digicel Head of Marketing, Jacqueline James, “Digicel’s vision is to support and provide activities which cater to educational, social and cultural opportunities that can inspire positive energy in residents which can ultimately lead to stronger communities.”
James said Digicel will continue to seek ways to foster the community spirit within Matthew’s Ridge and other communities throughout Guyana.
Digicel launched its service in Matthew’s Ridge in March this year, bringing mobile technology to the community for the first time. At the time of its launch, Digicel donated four computers to the Matthew’s Ridge School.
