PRISON Officer, Orlando Jaundoo was on Friday remanded to prison following his appearance before Magistrate Roby Benn at the New Amsterdam Court to answer a charge of aiding and abetting in the escape of a prisoner. He denied the charge, and was refused bail.
Particulars of that charge are that on June 4 at New Amsterdam, he aided and abetted Krishna Paul Doerga , a convicted prisoner, to escape.
Police Corporal, Orin Joseph, prosecuting, objected to bail, citing the nature and gravity of the charge, this being the defendant’s betrayal of trust. He argued that if granted bail, the defendant may very well flee the jurisdiction.
But Defence Counsel, Kim Kyte-John countered that her client was instructed to take the prisoner to the Prison Annex to fix a sewing machine, and was forced under threat of violence to take his charge to Springlands and subsequently to the border town of Nickerie in neighbouring Suriname.
Said counsel in her client’s defence: “ Your Worship, as soon as possible, my client reported the incident to the police in Nickerie . He was overpowered; he was taken to do a medical, but it was not presented in court.”
Kyte-John pleaded that her client, who resides at Mahaicony, is just 24, and is not a flight risk, as if he had wanted to flee, he had every opportunity of doing so. It was also his first brush with the law, she said.
The matter is fixed for hearing and bail review on June 24.
