JUSTICE Frank Holder, presiding at the Cecil Benn murder trial at the Essequibo assizes yesterday issued a death sentence after an assize jury had unanimously found Kenny Arthur Grant guilty of murder. Grant had attended a nine-day celebration for a baby when an argument arose which led to a stabbing and death.
Cecil Benn, it is said, had intervened in the quarrel. Evidence disclosed that Cecil Benn pushed and slapped Grant during the quarrel. Grant, who earlier was armed with a cutlass which had to be taken away from him, pushed his hand into his pocket and withdrew a knife with which he stabbed away at Benn.
The stabbing had taken place at Westbury, Essequibo Coast. The deceased who spent three days in hospital died on September 16, 2006.
Mr. Compton Richardson was defence counsel while Ms. Latchmie Rahamat from the DPP Chambers, prosecuted.
