20-year old nabbed with stolen articles in Berbice

FOLLOWING a robbery at A. Ally’s and Sons storage bond at Vryheid Village, West Canje on May 18 last, police have charged 20-year old Egland Steven with receiving stolen articles. The Savannah Park resident, appeared before Magistrate Fabayo Azore at Albion Court, where he was not required to plea to the indictable charge. He was allowed $40,000 bail and ordered to return to New Amsterdam Court on June 13.
Police Prosecutor Inspector Satrohan Dayaram, told the court that following a tip off, ranks descended on the defendant’s home, on May 30 last, where they found an amplifier and a DVD player totaling $182,280.
According to the prosecutor, the items retrieved were a part of the booty stolen from the storage bond on the chain stores.
On that date shortly after 02:30 hrs, the security guard  had moments before used the bathroom facilities when he was allegedly confronted by several men who emerged from a silver gray car.
The men are alleged to have bounded the wrist of the guard, before using a nipper to cut the chains which securely held the padlocked door.
Once inside the building, the thieves emptied several boxes containing amplifiers and other electrical items, and escaping before dawn.
Sources said a bread knife, which was left close by, was used by the guard to cut the cords which previously tied him.
Three hours later the matter was reported to the guard’s supervisor, who subsequently informed the police.
The value of the booty is estimated in excess of a $1M.
A senior police source informed this newspaper that he is of the opinion that much of the booty is either hidden or out of the area, but with time it will surface and the perpetrators will be caught.
Several persons were detained for questioning. However, they were all released.
