Pele take Awareness crown

PELE Football Club (PFC) won the Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company (GT&T)-organised FastBall Awareness competition, following a two-nil win over BK International Western Tigers at the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) ground Sunday night. Pele’s goal was scored by Mervin Joseph who found the back of the net with the blue ball and following the competition’s rules – any goals scored with the blue ball will be doubled, Joseph’s strike was equivalent to two goals hence PFC’s victory scoreline.
In the third place game, Fruta Conquerors defeated the home team GFC 6-3, with Travis Hackett netting a brace, before Odel Williams, Kwame La Fleur and Dwayne Lawrence found the back of the net with the blue ball.
In the semifinal matchups, BK Western Tigers defeated GFC 5-1 with Dwayne Ali scoring with the blue ball, while Wendell St Hill, Royan Thomas and Randolph Wagner also scored, with Terrence Lewis finding the back of the net for GFC.
Pele got past Fruta Conquerors 2-1 thanks to Sheldon Holder’s blue ball strike while Dwayne Lawrence scored Fruta Conquerors’ lone goal.
At the Mackenzie Sports Club (MSC) ground in Linden, the venue which will be used for the opening match, one game was played with Silver Shattas defeating Eagles United, but no scores were available.
The upcoming tournament, which will have over $2M in cash and prizes being distributed to victorious male and female teams, is being organised by GT&T, the Kashif and Shanghai Organisation and Hits and Jams, and with a view of sensitising the public about the game.
More awareness games will be played around Guyana with the dates and times being disclosed shortly.
