CECIL Melbourne, 49, was remanded to prison, by Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry yesterday, on a charge of trafficking in narcotics.
The defendant pleaded not guilty to the offence, particulars of which said, on June 3, at Ogle Airport, East Coast Demerara, he had 448 grammes of cannabis (marijuana) in his possession for the purpose. Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) Special Prosecutor Oswald Massiah said the defendant (no address given) was a passenger on the Guyana Air Services Ltd flight to Kaikan when the substance was found on his person.
The prosecutor said Melbourne was being searched when the security guard observed that the area of the defendant’s crotch appeared bulky and he, subsequently, took out a package from there and handed it to the officer.
The package contained leaves, seeds and stems of the prohibited plant, the Court was told before the defendant was refused bail and the case transferred to another Court for June 17.
