Bountiful pineapple harvest being reaped in Mainstay/Whyaka

TOSHOA of Mainstay/Whyaka, Ms. Yvonne Fredericks has reported that farmers in her community are reaping a bountiful harvest of pineapples.
She told a meeting of the Hinterland Affairs Committee of Region 2 (Pomeroon/Supenaam) Regional Democratic Council (RDC), in the Regional Boardroom at Anna Regina, on Monday that the processing factory cannot handle the large amount of produce.
According to her, the factory, which is not owned by the RDC, had purchased 34,766 of the fruits up to Sunday and processed 80,000 jars of chunks for the overseas markets.
She said the target for this crop is 150,000 jars and there are still much more pineapples in the field to be harvested.
Fredericks said many farmers are selling their pineapples on the local market at Charity, Anna Regina and Suddie, all on the Essequibo Coast, and as the yield looks good, they are being encouraged to cut and prepare new lands for cultivation.
