PPP condemns PNCR seeking to stymie work of ERC

THE People’s Progressive Party (PPP) condemns the action by the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR) to stymie the work of the Ethnic Relations Commission.
“That party had applied for and was granted an injunction to prevent the ERC from carrying out its duties,” said a statement from the ruling party yesterday.

“This once again demonstrates that the PNCR has no interest in any work to improve ethnic relations in Guyana. They have shown that they would like to use those relations as a political football.
“From the very beginning, that party tried to prevent the working of the ERC.
“The public will recall that shortly after October 1992, the PPP/C government made strong efforts to establish such a committee. The PNCR opposed it, citing its disagreement with Bishop Randolph George being appointed as the Chairman.
“It took years for the PNC to accept the need for the ERC.
“However, it has done its damnedest to prevent the ERC from working.
“It has manoeuvred in Parliament to obstruct the establishment of the ERC, when that failed it targeted individuals and tried to discredit the commission, using slander and innuendoes.
“The latest act has removed the fig leaf that covered the nakedness of that Party and must expose them for not wanting any independent body to deal with improving ethnic relations in our country.
“The People’s Progressive Party roundly condemns this action by the Opposition Leader and calls for them to halt such senseless actions,” the statement concluded.
