POLICE have charged two men with the brutal murder of Shewraney Doobay, wife of prominent Dr. Ramsundar Doobay, who was found in a pool of blood at her Echilibar Villas, Campbellville, Georgetown home, last week Tuesday. One of the accused is the victim’s nephew, Mark Singh, of Lot 44 Plaisance and the other is his friend, Shakir Mohamed, of Lot 127 Latchuni Street, Better Hope, also on East Coast Demerara.
The duo appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry yesterday, on the joint charge that said they committed the capital offence on May 24.
Police Inspector Stephen Telford, prosecuting, said Singh, occupying a house owned by the dead woman, was obligated to pay rates and taxes for the property and the two of them had a misunderstanding over the issue when he and Mohamed went to her home in a motor car.
The prosecutor said the two were invited in by Singh’s aunt and offered food but the accused attacked her with a hammer, that was recovered, when she was not paying attention.
Attorney-at-law Mr. Gordon Gilhuys, who appeared for the accused, alleged that they were beaten with bags over their heads while in detention.
The men were remanded to prison and the case was transferred to another court for June 6.
Dr. Doobay, Head of Internal Medicine at Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH), discovered his 58-year-old wife dead in their home, after getting assistance to break into the house.
