DE Bluetoother would like to wish everybody a happy Independence. Today is 45 years since de nation was born when de Union Jack disappear and de Golden Arrowhead appear. Four and a half decades is still considered young; and when you young it does tek sometime before yuh turn “big man” and start to achieving. Some, after turning “big man”, does tek more than 45 years before achieving anything. However, when yuh look around, yuh realise that plenty was achieved since Independence from de colonial masters 45 years ago.

The dictatorial regime that ruled from then to 1992 left thousands without water, electricity, roads, health care, education, food and other basis necessities. Constitutional rights were hijacked and the populace deprived. Oppression engulfed de Land while de leaders enjoyed extravagance at de taxpayers expense. And people couldn’t even talk ‘bout it! When yuh talk, yuh get jailed or even killed. Independence was just a word. People became hopeless. Thankfully, Uncle Cheddi and his loyal supporters didn’t.

If they did, then today, “cat eat we dinner”. De struggles of Uncle Cheddi and his Party, led to de “light at de end of de tunnel”, with de Dawn of a New Era” on October 05, 1992. Plenty believe that was de day de country really get Independence. Since then, electricity and water almost reaching everybody, all de main roads now smooth smooth and got street lights, plenty new hospitals and health centres built providing thousands more with health care, same thing fuh schools all over with new ones built, food plenty with nuff nuff supermarkets around, everybody now got phones and computer and car is no longer a luxury.

That is only some of de many things that happen since 1992; less than 20 years! When yuh add in de Stadium and all dem new Banks, and de Berbice and Takutu Bridges and de Skeldon Factory and Enmore Packaging Plant and so on, then yuh realise de plenty good things that happen. Some places ain’t achieve half of that in 60 years! So, in other words, de country really independent 19 years now! And with all de achievements, it ain’t gon be wrong to say that, proportionally, de country achievements is beyond expectations given de short time it really turn Independent: 19 years! Hmmm!
