THE Guyana Oil Company (GUYOIL) yesterday added its support to the Guyana Boxing Board of Control (GBBC)-organised RAMPAGE, by pumping $150 000 into the card, thereby joining Digicel and COURTS (Guyana) Inc. While handing over the cheque to president of the GBBC, Peter Abdool, GUYOIL’s Marketing Supervisor Cheryl James said her employers were proud to contribute to the event which will be held on Saturday at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall and will feature three title fights, along with two non-title bouts.
James said she hopes the contribution will be of “great value”, while wishing the GBBC success on this and its future endeavours.
Abdool expressed gratitude to Dr Bud Mangal, Chairman, Abdool Kadhir, Company Secretary, and Leonard Khan, Brand Manager for Castrol, who have always been supportive and “consistent” with their contributions to the fistic sport.
He told James, and marketing representatives Chris Virgil and Junior Rampersaud that the donation from the corporate community plays an integral role in the development of the sport and the fighters in Guyana. He reiterated the RAMPAGE is a culmination of the GBBC’s Friday Night Fights (FNF), of which GUYOIL plays an important role as well.
He added that the fighters, by constantly getting to compete, puts them in a position to not only fight for national belts but also get an opportunity to battle for the Caribbean Boxing Federation (CABOFE) titles, and ultimately breaking them into the ranks of the World Boxing Council (WBC).
On Saturday’s card, Lennox ‘Too Sharp’ Allen will be challenging Kwesi ‘Lightning Hitman’ Jones for the CABOFE super middleweight title while Dexter ‘The Kid’ Marques will trade punches with overseas-based pugilist Elton ‘Coolie Bully’ Dharry for the CABOFE bantamweight belt.
The other title fight will be between Mitchell Rogers and Kurt Bess for the national heavyweight title, while Ray Sandiford will take on Cecil Smith and Edmond De Clou will tackle journeyman Winston Pompey in an eliminator that will see the winner meet Howard ‘Battersea Bomber’ Eastman at a later date.
