Injured Enmore Estate sugar worker recovering slowly

RELATIVES of the injured Enmore Estate sugar worker, Jainarine Singh, yesterday told the Guyana Chronicle at the Woodlands hospital that “he is coming around slowly”. The explosion which occurred at the Enmore sugar factory last week Sunday resulted in the 47-year-old man being a patient in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at the Woodlands Hospital.
According to a senior official at the Guyana Sugar Corporation (GUYSUCO), who requested anonymity, Singh of Railway Embankment, East Coast Demerara, was on duty when he received the injuries to his chest and abdominal areas by a sudden explosion from the recently modified sugar dryer.
A team of trained medical personnel immediately rushed him to the hospital. According to the procedure, once the injuries sustained are out of the medical team at the corporation’s control, the injured party is normally taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corproration (GPGC). However, on their way to the GPHC, Singh requested that he was taken to the Woodlands Hospital. This wish was granted.
The official further revealed via a telephone interview that the corporation is footing all Singh’s medical bills and that the injured man would receive further reimbursement from the National Insurance Scheme (NIS) and from GUYSUCO accordingly to the labour laws and procedures.
He explained that the family has been cooperative with the corporation through out the entire misfortune and that Singh had already received one operation to his abdomen.
The official also noted that regular visits are made to the I.C.U to check on Singh’s improvement.
GUYSUCO says that they are investigating the matter and will surely take this seriously to avoid any future accidents and to keep its workers safe.
