AFTER a one all first half which saw Orland Semple and John Abrahams finding the back of the goal for Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) and Old Fort respectively, the former came out victorious 4-2 as action in the Guyana Hockey Board’s (GHB) organized Farfan and Mendes sponsored first division hockey tournament bullied off at the GCC ground Friday afternoon. Old Fort can only blame themselves for the loss, as they missed numerous opportunities to find the back of the net against their opponents, who opened the scoring in the 6th minute Semple’s strike, before Abrahams snatched the equalizer.
On the resumption of play, Abrahams, Dwight Sullivan and Dwayne Alleyne missed chances from close range, before Kevin Spencer found a space in Old Fort’s defence and slammed a shot past their custodian Mikhail Smith in the 37th minute.
The veteran Ivor Thompson responded three minutes later with the goal of the match, dribbling past a host of defenders weaving to his left and right and finished clinically into the far corner with Xavier being stranded on the near post.
Not to be outdone, GCC responded through the talented Shaka Gill who beat Smith with a deft deflection off a pinpoint accurate pass from Dwayne Scott in the 60th minute and watched as Semple put the result beyond doubt when he scored his second goal two minutes later.
The competition continues next Thursday with a double- header at the same venue, with the national Under-21 taking on Old Fort from 15:00hrs, while GCC will do battle with Hikers from 16:30hrs.
