Police here yesterday detained Akbar Muhammad, a visiting US Muslim cleric, on suspicion of ties to drugs and terrorism.
Officers reportedly raided the Princess Hotel at Providence, on the East Bank of Demerara, and took Muhammad to Eve Leary for questioning.
A senior police official told the Guyana Chronicle last night that Muhammad was still detained under suspicion of being involved in drugs and terrorism.
Muhammad, who arrived in the country earlier this week from Illinois, was expected to attend a rally organized by black activists in the mining town of Linden, yesterday afternoon. This is not his first visit to this country, as reports are that he has visited several times in recent years, but was never the focus of the law enforcement authorities then.
Muhammad is reportedly the spokesman for Nation of Islam Leader Louis Farrakhan, with whom he is said to have been working since in the 60s.
