Three years jail, $30,000 fine for trafficking in narcotics

LAWRENCE Simpson and Mervin Mahipat (no addresses given) yesterday appeared in court to answer a joint charge of trafficking in narcotics.
The duo appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry, and particulars of the offence stated that on May 13 last, they had 10 grammes of cocaine in their possession for the purpose of trafficking. Simpson pleaded guilty, while Mahipat pleaded not guilty.

Police Corporal Venetta Pindar, prosecuting, said on the day in question, police were conducting a raid and searched a house and found the defendants, along with the suspected substance. She said the defendants were arrested and admitted orally to the police that the substance belonged to them.
Simpson admitted in court that the cocaine belonged to him and that it was for his personal use. He was sentenced to three years imprisonment, along with a $30,000 fine.
Mahipat was remanded and is expected to return to another court today.
