GUYANA’S quest to dethrone seven-time Champions Jamaica started with 0-0 draw with Dominica, when the 20th Digicel Caribbean Cup kicked off at the Thomas Jefferson High School field in Brooklyn, New York.
Playing in front a highly vocal and festive crowd in the second match of the day’s planned triple-header, the Guyanese were kept at bay all day thanks to superb keeping from Dominica’s Bahir Etienne.
Reports emanating out of the US stated that the game was played at high intensity and saw some hard tackling from both sides with the game playing mostly in the midfield.
Guyana will next play St Lucia on May 29 and then Grenada as they attempt to better their 2010 performance.
Meanwhile, Trinidad and Tobago eased to a 5-0 win over their Colombian counterparts with Irasto Knights, Sharard Sullivan, Christian Taylor, Kyle Cupid and Elidon Yhip all finding the back of the net for the winners who led 3-0 at halftime.
The final game of the day which was played between Grenada and St Kitts & Nevis, ended with a 1-1 draw.
Jason Francois pounced on a defensive error to send the ‘Spice Boys’ into the lead and although Grenada looked poised to increase their lead, they were held at bay for the remainder of the first half.
However, two minutes into the second half a determined St Kitts/Nevis tied things up through a Jolston Whattley strike and after that the action was goal to goal with neither team able to crack the other.
The defending Champions Jamaica will get their first taste of action in the 2011 tournament against a determined Haitian side on June 5.
