More tangible evidence of development…

Residents welcome road lights along Essequibo Coast
…as well as in Berbice

ESSEQUIBIANS, very thankful to the Government for installing lights along the Essequibo Coast Public Road, have welcomed it as evidence of development that is currently taking place under the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) administration.
The ‘Cinderella County’ residents are looking forward to more such lighting at Henrietta, Walton Hall and Charity.
Lighting is already installed from Bush Lot to Taymouth Manor and will soon be at Queenstown, as expected from Johanna Cecelia to Suddie and Good Hope to Supenaam, where the new ferry stelling is located.
The commercial centre of Anna Regina township was a previous beneficiary.
Traffic Safety Engineer in the Ministry of Public Works and Communications, Nigel Erskine, on Friday, told the Chronicle that installation of the road lights project which aims to make the country’s highways safer for use by all citizens, in particular motorists, is ongoing.
He said 70 lights were recently installed by the Georgetown-based Cummings Electrical Company Limited between the village of Three Friends and Anna Regina, along the main Essequibo Coast thoroughfare.

Erskine also disclosed that additional funds have already been allocated for the installation of more road lights along the Essequibo Coast.

He noted that, at present,  work is being done in Berbice – between Number 12 Village and Cotton Tree, where 181 road lights are being installed.

The Berbice project which is being executed by the same contractor (Cummings Electrical) is about 65 per cent complete, according to Erskine.

The road lights installation project is being executed under the Road Safety Component of the Transport Infrastructure Rehabilitation Programme, with funding by the  Inter-American Development Bank and the Government of Guyana,  through a counterpart funding arrangement.

Meanwhile, maintenance of the 358 road lights which are in place between Vreed-en-Hoop and Parika, along the West Coast Demerara/East Bank Essequibo Highway, along with those on the West Bank of Demerara, is ongoing.

The lights have been strategically placed in densely populated areas along the highway.
This aspect of work which entails repairing all defective lights is being handled  by La Rose Electrical Company, who Erskine noted, recently completed repairs along the West Coast and is currently addressing faults on the West Bank.
Erskine also disclosed that a contract will soon be awarded for maintenance work to be done on the road lights stretching along the East Bank highway, leading to the Cheddi Jagan International Airport, Timehri. (Wendella Davidson and Rajendra Prabhulall)
