I am glad that the public is opening their eyes to David Granger, and is finally asking questions about his role as Chief of Staff of the GDF under the Burnham administration, and particularly during the time of Dr. Walter Rodney’s assassination. Walter Rodney was murdered on June 13, 1980. This allegedly, was the Burnham regime’s way of silencing an outspoken critic of their administration.
Prior to Rodney’s death, Burnham publicly called Rodney an upstart, and at the Cuffy Monument, he said that the WPA must “state their will”, since his “steel was sharper”.
Walter Rodney was prohibited from teaching at the University of Guyana.
Burnham used every resource at his disposal to intimidate Rodney and the other WPA members. The media, military, police, public service, were mobilized against Rodney and the WPA. They were trailed wherever they went; their vehicles and homes were constantly searched and scoured, and they were dragged into court routinely on frivolous charges. In one case, a sympathizer was brought before the court for the possession of a bullet in her home, and in another case a Radio Shack catalogue was taken away by the police as evidence of possible anti-government activity.
Former Army Sergeant, Gregory Smith, known as the trigger man, handed Walter Rodney the walkie-talkie handset which contained the grenade that later exploded and killed Rodney.
This was witnessed by Rodney’s brother, Donald Rodney, who was in the car when it exploded and killed Rodney. Donald Rodney did not suffer the same fate as his brother, but lived to give evidence of Gregory Smith’s role in his brother’s assassination.
The PNC never prosecuted Smith; instead, Smith conveniently disappeared from Guyana soon after Rodney’s death. Having Smith questioned by authorities would have possibly implicated members of the PNC elite, including the GDF Chief of Staff David Granger, who generally would dish out the orders. Smith reportedly lived in French Guiana, where he reportedly died in November 2002. Brigadier (Retired) David Granger must give account of his role as the GDF Chief of Staff during this period. The Brigadier is a presidential candidate, and, therefore, must clarify these scenarios.
