CSEC exams underway

– smooth sailing expected, says Examinations Superintendent
The 2011 May/June Caribbean Secondary Examination Certificate (CSEC) exams are currently underway and Superintendent of Examinations, Ms. Saudia Kadir, told the Guyana Chronicle that smooth sailing is expected.
The examinations started on April 15th with Visual Arts Paper 2, and continue today with Mechanical Engineering Technology Paper 2.

According to the superintendent, arrangements have been streamlined in preparation for the examinations and so far there have been no hiccups.
“There are approximately 12,800 students sitting the exams this year,” Kadir said.
In 2010, entries from public and private schools numbered 11,362, and 141 candidates secured Grade One passes in eight and more subjects. Analysis by the Ministry of Education revealed that the overall pass rate at the general and technical proficiencies for Grades One to Three was 66 percent, and the overall 2010 Grades One to Four pass rate was 86 percent in 2010.
Education sector stakeholders are looking forward to better results this year.
The Guyana Chronicle has had reports of students receiving time-tables late.
One parent told this newspaper that his child, a student from the Zeeburg Secondary School, had to go to a teacher’s home to collect the time-table.
Kadir stressed that head teachers have the responsibility to ensure that all the students are in possession of their time-tables, which were dispatched to the schools in good time.
