RELATIVES of 69-year-old Sukhdai Bacchus last saw her alive on Sunday afternoon, after paying a courtesy call on the Lot 80 Vryheid’s Lust, North, East Coast Demerara citizen, but never knew that would have been their farewell visit. Around 18:00 hrs (6 pm) on Monday afternoon, Bacchus’ neighbour Babita, came home from work and as she normally does, called out to the sexagenarian, but instead of hearing the usual cheery response from her neighbour, silence greeted her ear which was strange.

Upon investigation, Babita saw a liquid substance flowing through a few cracks in Bacchus’ flooring, at which point her (Babita’s) husband came home from a hard day’s work and discovered that the liquid which was pointed out to him, happened to be blood.

An alarm was raised, while Bacchus’ 47-year-old brother Ramdass Karan,  of Triumph Village, also on the East Coast of Demerara, was notified and on his arrival, found his widowed sister, whose husband passed away numerous years ago, with her throat slit and her lower body exposed for public examination.

When he arrived at the scene, criminal investigators from the Sparendaam Police Station, were conducting their investigations.

“I was home relaxing when my niece who lived nearby, called and informed me of the discovery. I never knew this would have happened, to her, since I last saw her alive two Sundays ago…,” Karan told the reporters.

He said when he turned up at the house in Vryheid’s Lust yesterday, the police were there looking for fingerprints and other clues.
“The house was ransacked, but there was no evidence of anything being stolen and while I can say she was an easy going person who lived friendly with her neighbours, I am unable to say if she had any problem with anyone that would have led them to do such a gruesome thing to her,” said Karan.

Meanwhile, a source within the Guyana Police Force informed this newspaper that the post mortem on Bacchus’ body was performed yesterday and the results showed she was vaginally and anally penetrated, while her throat was slit, resulting in her death caused from an incised wound to the throat area.
The childless Bacchus has left to mourn her four brothers and one sister and while Karan could not give the actual date of the funeral, he did say such arrangements would be made as soon as the post mortem was completed.
