Ray Yakub remanded on attempted murder, robbery under arms charges

RAY Yakub (no address given) was yesterday remanded to prison by Magistrate Hazel Octive-Hamilton on charges of attempted murder and robbery under arms.
He was not required to plead to the indictable charges, which stated that, on April 14, with intent to commit murder, he discharged a loaded firearm at Ganesh Jaigobin. Also, on the said date, being armed with a gun, he robbed Ganesh Jaigobin of $1.6M cash.

Attorney-at-law Mr. Adrian Thompson represented the accused and requested reasonable bail. He said his client is a clothes vendor and was nowhere around when the virtual complainant was robbed.
The lawyer claimed that the police went to his client’s home and picked him up for the alleged offence. He said 15 to 20 minutes after the robbery was committed, the police went to his client’s home.
Thompson said the police refused to take statements from people in the neighbourhood and, after searching his client’s home, found nothing.
According to the lawyer if someone committed such an act it is likely that the person will not return home, but will hide somewhere else.
He argued that his client was home and police took gun powder test, but nothing was found to implicate his client.
Police Corporal Venetta Pindar, prosecuting, objected to bail based on the seriousness of the offence and the likelihood of the accused interfering with the witnesses in the case.
The prosecutor said her facts differ from the lawyer and noted that the accused was picked out on an identification parade.
The accused was remanded to prison and the matter will be called again on May 25.
