THE Guyana Post Office Corporation (GPOC) has recorded another robbery in which its escort vehicle, containing an undisclosed amount of cash, was hijacked on Tuesday afternoon at Ogle Airstrip Road, East Coast Demerara. Meanwhile, police said they are investigating the robbery that occurred at about 17:40hrs on Tuesday on the Ogle Railway Embankment, East Coast Demerara, during which driver Delvin Heywood and security guards Debra Wilson and Wilfred Forde, employees of the GPOC, were attacked and robbed by three men, one of whom was armed with a handgun.
Heywood and the two security guards were in motor car PLL 415 heading for the Guyana Post Office, Georgetown, after collecting mail bags and a canister containing an undisclosed amount of cash.
While the vehicle stopped at the junction of the Ogle Airstrip, the robbers relieved Debra Wilson of her service .38 revolver and six rounds. The men then ordered their victims out of the vehicle and drove off with the mail bags and cash.
About two hours later the vehicle was found abandoned on an access road at Atlantic Ville, East Coast Demerara. Also on April 8, robbers broke into the Beterverwagting Post Office, East Coast Demerara and torched a bedded safe and carted off $5.7M which was expected to pay old age pensions.
And Sunday last, robbers broke into the Clonbrook Post Office, also on East Coast Demerara, tried to torch the safe; but they were disturbed before they got the safe open and fled.
Following the $5.7M heist at Beterverwagting Post Office, the Chairman of the GPOC, Bishop Juan Edghill, called a press conference where he outlined security measures to be implemented.
Several other post offices have been robbed over the past few months, including those at Danielstown, Essequibo; and Agricola, Greater Georgetown.
