RAYMOND La Fleur of Vryheid Village, West Canje, who allegedly threw a package containing marijuana over the prison wall in New Amsterdam, has been remanded to prison by Magistrate Adela Nagamootoo.
The defendant, 35, who appeared in the New Amsterdam Court yesterday, was not required to plea to the indictable charge of unlawfully introducing narcotic into the prison. He is expected to return to court on April 11.
Police Corporal Surlock King, prosecuting, said on Valentine’s Day, at about 06:00hrs, the defendant was seen motoring on his cycle along Penitentiary Walk, when he stopped in front of the prison visitor’s shed.
It is alleged that La Fleur removed a parcel from his boot and threw it over the western wall of the prison.
An eye-witness informed a prison officer, who found the parcel containing four packs of cigarettes and stems and leaves of the cannabis sativa plant (marijuana). The illegal drug weighed 168 grams.
Police said La Fleur was a previously remanded prisoner who had left the penal complex a few weeks ago.
