TAXI driver Leron Griffith was remanded to prison yesterday when he appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry on two charges of robbery under arms.
The defendant, 23, of Lot 3 Ketley Street, Charlestown, Georgetown, pleaded not guilty to both.
Particulars of one offence said, on March 19, being armed with a gun, he robbed Clarence Foster of a $55,000 watch and a $100,000 gold ring, amongst booty worth $600,000.
The other charge alleged that, the same day, at gunpoint also, he relieved Samantha Foster of belongings valued $376,000.
Police Corporal Venetta Pindar, prosecuting, said the virtual complainants were on their way home when Griffith, in company with two other persons, stopped their motor car, took away their valuables and escaped in another vehicle.
The prosecutor said that one of the victims took the number of the getaway vehicle which police found parked at the defendant’s home where a search also yielded some of the stolen items.
The magistrate upheld the police objection to bail for Griffith, based on the seriousness of the offences and postponed the case to April 11.
Albert Pierre (no address given) was also refused pre-trial freedom in the same court, on a wounding charge.
He was not required to plead to the indictable offence, which alleged that, on March 16, he unlawfully and maliciously inflicted grievous bodily harm on Diana Bowen.
Police Inspector Stephen Telford, prosecuting, said the accused and the virtual complainant are known to each other and she was fetching sand into her yard, through his passageway.
The prosecutor said an argument developed between them and Pierre cuffed the woman on her face, then threw her to the ground and stamped her about her body several times.
The prosecutor objected to bail on the ground that Bowen is still hospitalised and his objection was upheld, resulting in Pierre having to remain incarcerated through tomorrow.
