PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad (CMC) – Newtown United of St Kitts and Nevis suffered a heavy 5-0 drubbing at the hands of Caledonia AIA as they bowed out of the Caribbean Football Union Club Championship qualifying series at the first round on Saturday night.
Playing at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, the Kittitian side never found their footing to be down 2-0 at halftime and failing to put a fight in the second half as the hosts ran out comfortable 6-0 winners on aggregate.
Caledonia, who won the first leg 1-0, needed only a nil-all draw to reach the second round but got much more than that.
Midfielder Ryan Stewart opened Caledonia’s account in the 12th minute to leave Newtown with a mountain to climb and that task got even more difficult when Jean-Luc Rochford, who netted the lone goal at Warner Park in the first leg, scored three minutes before the break.
The tie was all but over three minutes into the second half when winger Kareem Joseph made it 3-0 and strikers Akim Armstrong (64th) and newly-signed Kevon Woodley (88th), who replaced Rochford in the second half, completed the rout.
“I must pay credit to the guys because I thought they remained focused on the job at hand and showed their superiority over Newtown United in every department,” said Caledonia coach, Jamaal Shabazz.
“We also showed a bit more maturity in the way we controlled the pace of the match.”
Caledonia will now face Haitian champions Tempete in the second round tie scheduled for next month.
