ENGLAND batting coach Graham Gooch believes the team are capable of putting an unconvincing group stage behind them and going on to win the World Cup.
Andrew Strauss’ side learned on Sunday that they will face Sri Lanka in the quarter-finals in Colombo next Saturday.
England will be boosted by the fact that they emerged triumphant from their last one-day series in Sri Lanka, winning 3-2 there in 2007, and Gooch sees plenty to be optimistic about.
“Winning the World Cup didn’t happen for me, and I hope that this team have got it within them to win the World Cup – I’m convinced they have,” he told Sky Sports.
“They have come through this first stage of the competition, they have shown their fighting qualities, they have shown their resilience. I think we can get better, if we do, we have got as good a chance as anyone else.” (PA Sport)
