Guyana’s left arm- orthodox spinner Veerasammy Permaul took his third five wicket haul (6-39) and a match haul of 9-78, to guide Guyana to a winning position at the end of the penultimate day of their sixth round Regional four day match against Combined Campuses and Colleges (CCC) at the 3Ws’ Oval, Cave Hill, Barbados yesterday.
Scores: CCC 251 and 155; Guyana 207 and 30-1.
Needing to score 200 to score a come from behind victory, after bowling out their opponents for 155, thanks to Permaul and Zaheer Mohammed (2-23) efforts with the ball and , despite Nkrumah Bonner’s resilient 62, Guyana ended the day on 30-1.
Having failed to negotiate the pace of both Kevin Mc Lean and Carlos Braithwaite in the first innings, debutant Richard Ramdeen fared better in the second innings, by hitting both for boundaries, before he lost Rajendra Chandrika (04) who was caught by wicketkeeper Jamal Smith down the leg side off Ryan Austin’s first delivery, 20 minutes before the close of play.
Leon Johnson (08) joined Ramdeen who was unbeaten on 13 with his two fours, as Guyana ended the day in fading light at 1800hrs, needing a further 170 runs to complete their first victory over their opponents in five meetings, as well as their first win of the season.
Earlier, CCC resumed on their overnight score of 40-3, with Romel Currency on 21 and Kyle Corbin yet to score, and lost Corbin who was lbw to Permaul for 7 in the second over of the day, after playing a lovely extra cover drive for four two deliveries earlier that took him past the 500 run mark this season.
Permaul struck again when he had Currency caught by Vishal Singh at forward short leg for 28 scored off 74 deliveries with three fours and one six from 128 minutes batting, to leave CCC on 69 for five and a lead of 113 with Floyd Reifer who eventually made 20 with two fours, on 9.
The 38 year old Reifer, who unsuccessfully led the West Indies in two test matches against Bangladesh two years ago, fought back for his side with a four through point off Ronsford Beaton, but struggled against Permaul who bowled unchanged in the first session.
Mohammed removal of both Reifer and Jamal Smith (02), saw CCC who posted their 100 from 37.4 overs, take the luncheon break at 111-7, with Bonner unbeaten on 23, while Permaul had the impressive figures of 4-26 from 16 overs.
After the break, CCC lost Braithwaite and Mc Lean off successive deliveries in the second over from Permaul whose hat trick was denied by Austin, before Bonner punched the bowler off the back foot and through point for four to push the score to 118-9.
Bonner continued with back to back fours off Mohammed who was inconsistent in his line and length as the batsman moved to 46 and Austin 5, before rain stopped play at 13:45hrs, with CCC on 136-9, a lead of 180 runs.
Play finally got underway at 16:15hrs and Bonner duly got to his half century from 109 deliveries, batting for 120 minutes and hitting five fours, while CCC reached the 150 mark from 58.2 overs, with Bonner on 58 and Austin offering valuable support on 6.
Bonner continued in his efforts to push his team close to the 200 mark, when he pulled Ronsford Beaton through midwicket for four, before he lost his off stump to the said bowler off the next delivery for a well played 62 that took him 130 deliveries to accumulate from 143 minutes batting, with six fours, while he added 46 valuable runs for the final wicket with Austin, that took CCC from 109-9 to 155.
Play will get underway at 09:30hrs today, with Guyana having 98 overs at their disposal to get the 170 runs they need to complete the win.
