Despite inclement weather…

Construction of Sussex Street bridge moving ahead
DESPITE the inclement weather, construction work on the Sussex Street bridge continues to move apace to meet the April month-end deadline.
According to Mr. Roy Bassoo of R. Bassoo and Son’s Contracting Company, work at the site is progressing and the workers there are preparing to install the two concrete abutments or sides of the bridge.
“Since last week, we have been hampered by the rains and we have tried to continue work but every time we pump the water out, it fills up again,” he explained.
Bassoo pointed out that after the abutments have been installed, work will commence on installing the concrete flabs on the bridge, which will bring the structure one step closer to completion.
He explained that he remains optimistic that the structure will be completed on schedule.
Bassoo said, “We have had a set back for about one week and things are not moving at the pace we hoped they would, but we should meet the April month end target.”
The bridge is being widened to accommodate the four lane highway being constructed under the Inter-American Development Bank funded Bridges II programme. The highway will run from Broad Street and will continue south to meet the East Bank corridor.
The IDB-funded project is to facilitate the significant increase in vehicular traffic along the roadway.
