US$2.25M in cocaine seized from transshipment vessel from Guyana

OFFICERS of the Jamaica Customs Department yesterday seized 225 pounds (122.65 kilogrammes) of cocaine with a street value of more than J$217 million, at Port Bustamante in Kingston. The seizure was made after a routine examination of a transhipment vessel, Vega Azurit which sailed from Guyana and arrived at Berth 9 in Kingston, Jamaica at 05:00 hrs yesterday morning.

According to a Jamaica Observer report, customs in a statement last evening, said that no arrests have been made, but that preliminary investigations suggest that the contraband was destined for Jamaica.

The packages have been handed over to the Trans National Crime and Narcotics Division (TNCD) of the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) for further examination and investigation.

And in a separate discovery, two guns – an AK-47 assault rifle and a shotgun – were seized by the police yesterday morning following a search of barrels on the port.
Two persons were arrested for the gun find, the Observer report added.
