Health Ministry joins gov’t emergency flood interventions

– medex and doctors deployed to Region Three
REGIONAL Health Officer, Region Three, Ravindranauth Persaud has reported that five medex and doctors have been  deployed to the De Kinderen, Meten-Meer-Zorg and Prem Nagar Area G housing areas, Region Three where they are carrying out emergency health visits, and will continue to do so over the next two days.
Persaud said that these areas are being manned by health centres within the villages which have been inundated over the past few days due to above average rainfall that measured 8.9 inches on Monday last on the West Coast of Demerara.
“The services of the health centres were partially disrupted as a result of that, what we had to do were to send medex. We’re sending five medex and doctors to do house to house visits,” Persaud said.
Citizens will be offered medications for health concerns brought on by the flood and advice will be dispensed on proper hygiene and health precautions by the medical personnel.
Persaud added that health centres will continue to offer services allowing additional persons to access care.
Minister of Agriculture, Robert Persaud and teams from the National Drainage and Irrigation Authority (NDIA) have been carrying out inspections and interventions at several farming and vulnerable communities over the past few days.
La Nina conditions has adversely affected many villages and is posing possible health risks to residents, hence the Health Ministry’s move to provide medical assistance in villages where threats to health are real.
In Meten-Meer-Zorg, De Kinderen and Den Amstel, among many other West Coast Demerara villages, pumps and excavators were deployed earlier in the week to clear drains and pump the water off the land. (GINA)
