FOR the second time this year, the Guyana Chess Federation (GCF) has joined forces with Demerara Distillers Limited (DDL) and their TOPCO brand of juices, to organise and host a one-day Rapid Chess tournament which is fixed for Monday, March 21, at the Kei-shar’s Sports Club, Hadfield Street, Werk-en-Rust.
Registration begins at 09:00 h and the competition kicks off one hour later. This Swiss System tournament will consist of eight rounds with a time limit of 40 minutes per game and is open to all male and female chess players in both the senior and junior categories.
Tournament fee for senior non-members is $800 and juniors $600, while senior members of the GCF will pay $300 and junior members $200. Trophies and cash prizes will be at stake for the respective winners.
A special prize will be presented to the top junior player who is able to checkmate or win his or her opponent in the shortest game of the tournament.
DDL’s TOPCO Brand Executive, Alexis Crawford, presented the cheque for sponsorship to treasurer of the GCF, Shiv Nandalall, at the tournament venue last Friday.
She observed that chess is a small but growing sport and took the time to encourage other companies to aid the development of the game.
Nandalall thanked the DDL executive for maintaining her company’s support and noted that the GCF is always planning competitions with the objective of allowing players to test their skills regularly and partnership with sponsors is always welcome.
Interested players can contact Irshad Mohamed on 664-1650 or Shiv Nandalall on 225-8270 during office hours for further details on the tournament.
