THE body of Mohamed Shadeke, 58, of Stanleytown, West Bank Demerara, was found in a trench at North Section, Canal Number Two Polder yesterday morning.
He had lived alone and was unmarried. A resident in the neighbourhood, who requested anonymity, told the Guyana Chronicle that he opened his gate, about 07:45 hrs, to take his child to school, saw an umbrella on his bridge and the partially submerged corpse in the water.
He said, he, immediately called the Police but did not speculate as to the cause of death.
The upper body of the deceased was in the waterway while his feet were on the parapet, where his umbrella, cap and sneakers were also seen.
When the Guyana Chronicle visited the scene, a pack of cigarettes, a lighter and several $100 notes were left on a bench, having been taken from the man’s pockets by investigators.
Shadekee’s employer (who also did not want to be named) said he did odd jobs for him on Sunday afternoon after he had paid him for some work he had previously done.
He said Shadekee, a habitual drinker, had consumed alcohol that afternoon and was on his way home when he fell into the deep and drowned.Joan Sudarsan, a relative of his, said she was informed that Shadekee had fallen into the trench and after his body was found yesterday morning, it did not have any marks of violence but a post mortem examination is being awaited.
Preparations were being made to host a wake for him, last night, at his brother’s residence.
