JOSEPH Bharrat, 18, of Lot 94 Third Street, Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara, was remanded to prison yesterday, on conviction for forgery and uttering a forged document.
Before Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry, he pleaded guilty to having, between September 1, 2010 and March 10, 2011, with intent to defraud, forged one Guyana driver’s licence, in favour of himself, purporting to show that he was a holder of it, knowing that to be false.
Bharrat also admitted uttering the forged licence to a Police Constable on March 10.
The convict told the court he dropped out of school to work and take care of younger brothers and his mother and was too young, at the time, to get a licence.
Bharrat said he is the breadwinner of his family and works as a driver.
Attorney-at-law Mr. George Thomas, who represented Bharrat, begged the magistrate to have mercy on the latter because the youth did not waste the court’s time.
But police prosecutor Sergeant Lionel Harvey, said, based on the guilty plea, the defendant should be dealt with according to the law.
However, the magistrate postponed sentencing for March 14.
