Four charged with pre-paid meter theft from GPL

THREE Guyana Power & Light (GPL) contract workers, Orlando Roach, Wayne Williams and Conrad Quintin (no addresses given) appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry yesterday, jointly charged with simple larceny.
Particulars of the offence, for which they all pleaded not guilty, said, between October 25, 2010 and March 8, 2011, they stole one pre-paid meter, valued $14,729 and a communication cable worth $3,000 in booty with a total value of $27,359, property of GPL.
An arrest warrant was issued for a fourth co-defendant, Shelton Cheddie.
Police Sergeant Lionel Harvey, prosecuting, said the four were contracted by the utility and they installed the meter and other equipment on Cheddie’s premises after stealing them from GPL.
The prosecutor said an investigation was carried out and the missing articles were found at Cheddie’s place, where the latter had paid the quarter $75,000 for the installation.
The defendants were each put on $50,000 bail until March 15.
