The Guyana Fire Service (GFS) was alerted and four tenders rushed to the location and soon the situation was under control.
Firefighters were trying to ascertain whether it was an electrical fire, but it appears that nothing was set alight by inmates.
Last year prisoners at the Camp Street jail set a mattress alight and it was quickly doused by firemen.
