House-cleaning, reviewing anti-crime strategies on police agenda for 2011

…says Commissioner Henry Greene
COMMISSIONER of Police Henry Greene yesterday told Police Officers’ at their Annual Conference that this year their focus will be on house cleaning, renewing loyalty to the state, ensuring that they are on the right track in keeping with government’s directive, and reviewing strategies in dealing with crimes.
The Commissioner quoted verses of the Police Act which highlighted their mission as it relates to meeting from time to time to discuss, re-examine, change, re-focus, and ensure they are doing their job and doing it correctly.

He said, “We look at everything and decide what we will do in terms of our programmes and reviewing our security posture so that we can ensure that we understand what is happening in this country where security is concerned, and that we deal with whatever issues might be arising.”
He referred to a significant rise in murders last year, with domestic murders dominating.

Greene observed that crime was up by nine per cent in the first two months of this year, including cases of murders, robberies, burglaries, break-and-enter and larcenies.
He said, “We will review why; and determine what we have to do to ensure that we can improve in these areas.”
Greene stated that last year there were 109 illegal firearms found in the country and, in 2009, there were 82. One hundred and twenty-eight were found in 2008, 715 in 2007, and 118 in 2006.

Greene pointed out that in 2010 the police were faced with the challenge of Tyrone Rowe, called ‘Cobra’, and his gang members, some of whom were captured and are in jail.

Greene also spoke of instances where people are stealing from their employers by creating and crafting schemes, and he pledged a reviewing of strategies to combat such crimes.

The Guyana Police Force yesterday opened its three-day Officers’ Annual Conference at Police Officers’ Mess, Annexe, Eve Leary, Georgetown, under the theme:

“Consolidating our gains through effective strategic planning and institutional modernisation for safer communities.”

The event got underway with the arrival of the Commissioner, Henry Greene; Minister of Home Affairs, Clement Rohee; and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Guyana President Bharrat Jagdeo, followed by the review of the Guard of Honor.
Assistant Commissioner of Police, Gavin Primo, who is the Commander of ‘C’ Division, welcomed the gathering yesterday morning.
Opening remarks and introduction of President Jagdeo, who delivered the feature address, were done by Commissioner Greene.
